What to Expect from a Puerto Princesa Underground River Tour

The underground river in Puerto Princesa landed a spot in the New 7 Wonders of Nature earlier this year. Since then, the number of visitors to Subterranean River National Park has increased. Here are some things worth knowing before taking a Puerto Princesa Underground River Tour.

Prepare for a Bumpy and Long Ride

Travel time to Sabang Port from the city center is about 2 hours. You’ll have about an hour of smooth ride and another hour of “hard massage” ride as one of our tour guides would put it.

Most often than not, tourists taking a Puerto Princesa Underground River tour will be picked up at the hotel between 7 and 7:30 in the morning (unless you requested for a later or earlier time). If you didn’t get the chance to have breakfast, you’ll be able to grab something to eat at Taratitat, a halfway rest stop on the way to the river. You will also see “Tres Marias” or the 3 mountains.

How long you will wait for a boat to be provided for your group will depend on the number of people at the port. This is the reason it’s best to go there early, as you wouldn’t want to spend an awful lot of time waiting. Once you get to the mouth of the river, you’d still have to wait for a few more minutes for another boat that will take you inside the river.

Prepare for a One-of-a-Kind Puerto Princesa Underground River Tour

What makes a Puerto Princesa Underground River Tour fun is the humor and imagination of the boatmen. Inside the cave, your guide/boatman will show you different structures formed by the stalactites and stalagmites. He may also tell you a short history and a few trivia about the river.

When inside the cave, make sure to keep the helmet on. It would be hard to identify whether it’s bat urine or water that fell on your head. Yes, there are bats, inside the cave. During your Puerto Princesa Underground River tour, you’d notice that there is a distinctive smell inside the cave. Don’t worry, you’ll be too busy listening to your guide and looking at different structures to worry about the smell.

After the tour, you’ll have lunch at Sabang Beach. If you have time to kill, you can spend the afternoon swimming or getting a tan at the beach.
