Visit Plaza Cuartel on Your Puerto Princesa City Tour

Visiting the Plaza Cuartel is part of a Puerto Princesa city tour package that you will get from most Palawan travel agencies. Not sure if you’ll be interested in going to the site? Here’s what you can expect to see at Plaza Cuartel.

Commemorative sculpture, Plaza Cuartel, Puerto Princesa
Commemorative sculpture

Plaza Cuartel is located near the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Before it was turned into a park in 1997, it was originally a Japanese garrison for the American prisoners of war in WWII. It was said  that about 143 American prisoners of war were burned to death by the Japanese. While the history of the park looks grim, the park in itself doesn’t look as gloomy as its history.

The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive at the site during your Puerto Princesa city tour, is the sturdy arch that serves as a reminder of the event. Inside, you will also see a marker that explains what happened that fateful day of December.

Aside from the arch, you will also see a memorial marker made for the American prisoners who died in Palawan. Beside that is a commemorative monument made by Don Schloat. He was a World War II veteran who had been fortunate to escape from the hands of the Japanese. He placed the marker himself on September 2009, with the help of the city government and Mayor Edward Hagedorn. The sculpture shows a burning man, who is in agony. The sculpture perfectly depicted how devastating a war can be.
